Dinner Party With a Theme

Dinner Party in the Mossy Woods of Scandinavia

There’s something magical about dinner parties that feel like stories. When I was invited to style a four‑course dinner with a “in the mossy woods” theme for a hostess with exquisite taste—and a kitchen that rivaled a foodie’s dreams—I knew this was a chance to use decor to pull together form, flavor, and forest into one unforgettable evening.

Bringing the Theme to Life

The theme was “A lone stag in the Scandinavian foggy forest.” My goal was to evoke woodland serenity and elegance—but with a touch of mystery. To do this, I wove together textures, natural elements, and lighting that felt like candlelight filtering through trees, moss and greenery. The only thing missing was a mini fog machine which was part of the design but we couldn’t get it in time.

The plan

  • Garlands of greenery & moss — lush, trailing moss, intertwined with native greenery. These garlands became the backbone of the table. Their organic, slightly wild feel set the mood. An overflowing moss bowl with tiny mushrooms and antlers was also created to expand the theme.
  • Decorative antlers — We apray painted large statement antlers to give the illusion of being word and intertwined them into the garland and at key points (centerpieces, side tables) and accenting each place setting. They brought the forest’s quiet strength.
  • Candles, tall & low — a mix of taper candles in tall candlesticks and smaller votive / pillar candles placed at different heights. The flickering glow added depth and intimacy, softening shadows and spotlighting textures.
  • Printed menus at every place — at each place setting, guests found a menu printed in elegant type, hinting at what was to come. It’s such a small detail, but it elevates the experience—makes every guest feel seen and part of something intentional. Since the book was a Swedish favorite the individual menus were also printed in Swedish for an amazing touch of realistic charm.

Details at Each Place Setting

Every little choice contributes to the whole. Here’s what I placed at each guest’s seat:

  • A printed menu resting on or beside the charger, so guests see what’s ahead before the first course arrives.
  • An antler—delicate, decorative—gifting that woodland touch right in front of you.
  • A sprig of fresh rosemary—aromatic, green, alive—nestled in with the antler and the menu. It adds scent and color, and it feels herb‑garden fresh.
  • Raw‑edge chargers underneath fine china to bridge rustic and refined.
  • Linen napkins, held with raw‑edge napkin rings—natural, slightly rough edges to contrast with the smoothness of the china, and the crispness of the linens.

Ambiance, Feel & Flow

Light was a soft companion. The low glow from candles allowed the greenery and moss to take center stage without competing with harsh overhead lighting. The antlers created a subtle play of shapes across the table—a nod to the deer motif—while the menu and rosemary sprigs gave guests something to touch, see, and smell before even taking their first bite.

Walking in, the table should feel like stepping into a forest clearing. Calm, a bit enchanted, but also utterly sophisticated.

The Four‑Course Dinner

Of course, decor is only part of the story. The hostess prepared a four‑course dinner from scratch which was as detailed as the decor—each dish a unique design and a labor of love. That level of culinary care deserves an environment worthy of it. The styling frames the meal, accentuates its rhythms, and cradles the dining experience. There were so many special touches it was like a menu inside of a menu.
