Hi Striped Barn Friends!
If you’ve ever romanticized a home remodel picturing serene mood boards, perfectly styled coffee in hand, and a gentle transformation unfolding like a home design show allow me to bluntly interrupt that fantasy.

Because this? This is the before-before.

Right now, my latest project looks less like a Pinterest board and more like a crime scene… but make it construction chic. We’ve got strategic holes cut into walls (hello, repipe!), stair railings that have completely vanished, and enough plastic sheeting to make you feel like you’re living inside a DIY experiment gone rogue.

Add in some electrical issues and windows that are clearly living their last life, and need replacing. The windows are where the remodel started because its true…one little update turns into ten… because in design, everything is connected and nothing minds its own business. Remodeling is basically a domino effect… touch one thing and somehow you’re redesigning everything!

Add somewhere in the middle of all this chaos? Floor samples and paint swatches scattered everywhere because naturally, this is also when all the big decisions get made. Add drywall, paint and it’s a full party over here!

And honestly? I couldn’t love it more.
There’s something wildly satisfying about the chaos phase of a remodel the moment when everything is stripped down to its bones. It’s raw, it’s messy, and yes, it’s slightly terrifying. You start questioning all your life choices somewhere between “Why is there dust inside the fridge?” and “Was that beam… important?” and “Wait… why does this outlet do absolutely nothing?”

But this is also where the magic starts…somehow you discover so much more about the house than you ever thought possible…both good and bad.

As a designer and GC, I’ve learned that the beauty isn’t just in the finished space, it’s in this in-between stage. The unglamorous, loud, dusty, “please don’t touch that exposed pipe” phase. This is where vision meets reality… and sometimes fights with it a little.

Let’s be honest: remodeling is not for the faint of heart. It requires patience, flexibility, a sense of humor, and a very high tolerance for living in what feels like a construction zone apocalypse.
But it’s also for the dreamers.
The risk-takers.
The ones who can look at a missing staircase railing and think, “This is going to be so good.”
So, if you’re in the thick of it. or about to dive in, just know:
The holes will get patched.
The wiring will get sorted.
The windows will fit like they should
The paint colors will finally get chosen.
The floors will make sense
The dust will settle (eventually).
And the chaos? It’s all part of the story.
Stay tuned… because right now it’s all plastic, pipes, samples, and a few electrical mysteries, but soon it’ll be something really, really beautiful.
And hopefully with fewer holes in the walls.
