Hi Striped Barn Friends!
As you know one of my favorite things is flower styling! I was picking out some flowers the other day for an event I was doing and I had someone ask me; “how do you know which flowers to put together?”. I had never thought about trying to explain it before but when I thought about it its the same as when you style a home except you usually throw in a theme.
In both flower arranging and interior design, the color palette is crucial. Designers often choose a cohesive color scheme for a room, while florists select flowers in complementary tones. Whether it’s blues and greens of a coastal theme or the warm, earthy hues of a rustic bouquet, color ties everything together.
This particular event was a grapefruit and orange picking party mixed with wine and champagne tasting! It was an 80 degree day and very last minute so I decided to go with a pink and orange theme trying to capture the colors of grapefruit and did a few large arrangements and threw some oranges and lemons in the vases and pulled out about 20 mini vases to continue the theme throughout. I also did some cupcakes with the same color pallet in mind.

Texture plays a huge role in both practices. In interior design, it’s about mixing textures through fabrics and finishes, while in flower arranging, it’s about combining delicate petals with sturdy stems. Both create layers of depth that create the perfect balance. That’s why we always add greenery and other elements when arranging florals, we think of it as our texture. For the mini vases I chose the main flowers in oranges and yellows, some small chamomile flowers which I use a lot, some assorted greenery and some cute little persimmon colored pods for a pop of pink. Baby pink carnations would have never worked with these colors so I was lucky to find these! There are 4 different sizes, shapes and textures but they also compliment each other.
Think of greenery, pods, branches, pods, foliage as the texture of flower styling.

Both flower arranging and interior design are personal expressions. The way you arrange your flowers or decorate your space speaks volumes about your taste, whether you prefer a minimalist, modern aesthetic or a rustic, boho style. The right flowers or decor can transform a space, making it feel uniquely yours. I added some larger choices to the large vases since they were a different scale than the mini vases.
The large vases were a different scale than the mini vases I added a few larger elements such as hydrangeas, sunflowers and eucalyptus to create a larger scale. We do this in home design also.

Whether arranging flowers or designing interiors, the goal is the same: to create a harmonious and beautiful environment that brings together a feeling, theme or plan.
I’d love to hear from you if you need ideas for your next party!
Happy Designing!
Carrie
